Ernaíne m. Colmáin of Tory Island

Other names

Ernán of Tory Island. Forms in CGSH include Eirnín and Moernóc.

Introduction

There is an Ernianus among the clerics of northern Ireland addressed in a letter by Pope elect John in AD 640. The letter, according to Bede, advised on the correct dating of Easter and warned of possible revival of Pelagianism (HE II.19). This Ernan is identified by Sherley-Price as the abbot of Tory Island (HE, Sherley-Price, 342). Reeves also thinks that Ernán of Tory ‘was probably the Ernianus mentioned in the superscription in the paschal epistle in Bede, H E ii.19’ (VC, Reeves, 238). Reeves lists the church of Tory Island as one of the foundations especially connected with Columba. ‘St Ernan, son of Colman, fifth in descent from Eoghan, son of Niall, was its first abbot.’ (VC, Reeves, 279). The first vernacular Life of Columba attributes the founding of Tory to Columba, who then passed it over to Ernán (Ó Riain, Dictionary, 287). Tory is recorded as being laid waste in 617 (same entry as martyrdom of Eigg): AU 617.1: Combustio martirum Ega; & occisio Torche, & loscadh Condiri. The feast day of Ernaíne m. Colmáin is, in Mart Do., on August 17, while that of Moernóc m. Cruisíne is on Aug 18; this proximity of commemoration might suggest the saints are in origin one. But if they are the same, as Ó Riain suggests (Dictionary, 288), and the obit of 635 for the latter is correct, then the identity with the Ernianus of the 640 letter becomes impossible.
