This saint is surmised from his appearance in place-names. The name may derive from Gaelic Cailean. Among Irish saints there is Caillin m. Niatach of Fenagh in Co. Leitrim (CGSH, Rec. Mai. 146), whose church, locally, was of considerable importance (Ó Riain, Dictionary, 135)
