Introduction
Áedán was the first bishop of the Northumbrians, summoned by King Oswald from Iona. He arrived on Lindisfarne in 635 (Bede, HE, 219). Mart. Do says his father’s name was Lughar and belongs to the Fothairt. Otherwise there is no record of his genealogy.

Aedhan, son of Lughar. He was of the race of Eochaidh Finn Fuath-nairt, from whom Brdghit descends. He was a bishop at Inis Cathaigh, and at Inis Medheoit, in the north-west of Little Saxonland; and it was on a pilgrimage that Aedhan went to Inis Medcoit.
