Etheldreda, Aethelthryth, abbess of Ely

Introduction

A princess of the East Anglian royal family, she was married first to Tondberht of the South Gyrwas, but on his death she married Ecgfrith, king of Northumbria. She wished to remain a virgin, but after twelve years Ecgfrith wished to consummate their marriage. She left him and became a nun at Coldingham, under her aunt Ebbe, and founded a double monastery at Ely in 673 (ODS, 138).
