Mary of Loreto

Other names

Our Lady of Loreto

Introduction

The cult of the Holy Family, and thence Mary of Loreto, seems to originate in the 13th/14th century with the supposedly miraculous transfer of the house of the Holy Family from Palestine towards the end of the main period of crusades. Scottish interest in the cult is likely to be later (15th / 16th century), a period when various popes were promoting the shrine as a place of pilgrimage. Because of this, and because dedications usually specify their relation to Mary of Loreto, it has seemed logical to separate this cult from other aspects of the cult of Mary.
