Cianán m. Sétnae of Duleek

Other names

Cian Bithbeo (CGSH no. 195 add.);

Introduction

Identification of C m Sétnae with C of Duleek is made by Stokes in to Mart O p 245 n. 3, and seems to be generally accepted (see Ó Riain, Dictionary, 166-7) Cianán is a bishop associated with the Cianachta of Brega and with the church of Duleek in Co. Meath. He has associations with several famous saints according to the copious notes in Mart. O, 24 Feb. He bathes in a bottomless tub with Cairnech of Tuilén who declares Cianan’s body ‘comely’: thus it is preserved ‘without corrupting, without dissolving, until Christ shall come to the great assembly of Doom’. His nails and hair were cut every Maundy Thursday until Adomnán’s time. When Adomnán visits the tomb ‘to behold and touch the body’ his (Adomnan’s) eye is struck out (and then restored). Patrick and Cianan copied each other’s transcripts of the canon. Union is made with Columba by Columba thrusting his hand into Cianan’s tomb and Cianan’s hand protruding. Apart from his main feast of 24 Nov there are other commemorations which may relate to him: on 19th Nov as Mochian, 29th Nov and 25 Feb (Ó Riain, Dictionary, 167). His association with a marvellous vessel and the fact that his name is related to that of the people he represents (the Cianachta) suggests that he may originate as an ancestral deity (ibid).
