Buite m. Brónaig of Monasterboice

Introduction

In list where one saint is weighted with another Buite is placed opposite Bede (CGSH no. 712.27): Beda Sapiens & monachus - Buti m. Bronaig. This 'spurious association' is due to the superficial likeness of the names (Ó Riain, Dictionary, 132). There is a Latin Life, VSH Plummer i, 87-97. It was composed after the foundation in 1142 of Mellifond (Ó Riain, Dictionary). This life brings Buite to Pictland, where he raises a king called Nechtan from the dead and is given a fortress (which some have identified with Kirkbuddo).
