The NGR is for Kirkcowan old Parish Church, of which only the eastern gable surives. There is a stone dated 1656 among the ruins (NMRS). In 1684 it was noted that 'Kirkcowan (is) pronounced Kiruan', which corresponds with the medieval forms of the name.
