Greenock was part of Inverkip parish until it was erected as an independent parish by Act of Parliament in 1594 (RPS 1594/4/54): '... this present perliament hes dissolvit and devydit and be thir presentis dissolvis and devydis the personage and vicarage of Inverkip in tua severall prochynnis, personages and vicarages, the ane thairof to retene the name of the personage and vicarage of Inverkip, and the uther to be callit in all tyme cuming the personage and vicarage of Grenok; and the haill teyndis, fruittis, rentis, proffittis and emolumentis of the landis of Grenok, Fynert and Spangok, with thair pertinentis, quhilk wer accustumat ofbefoir, to be pait to the personis and vicaris of Inverkip and now ar designit to the boundis of the said new erectit kirk and prochin of Grenok...'
