Parish notes
Granted to Arbroath Abbey by King William 1189x99 and confirmed to the uses of the abbey by Bp. Matthew of Aberdeen (x99). A vicarage perpetual had been erected by 1250 and was confirmed by Pope Alexander IV [Cowan has III] in 1257, the parsonage thereafter remaining with the abbey (Arb. Lib. i nos. 1, 27, 197-9; Abdn. Reg. i, 22; Ass 330, 387v). Cowan 1967, 72. Assume that the medieval parish kirk was St John's Kirk on cliff to west of Gardenstown (marked on OS Pathf. as St John's Church (Antiquity). Note that the bishop of St Andrews had rights in the lands of Gamrie (see Arb. Lib. i no. 169).
