The NGR given is for St Olaus's Chapel (sic), as marked on OS 6 inch 1st edn. This site of the original parish kirk was supposedly abandoned as it was overwhelmed by drifting sand, possibly as early as the thirteenth century (NMRS). The later parish church was built at NK070365.

The church was confirmed to bp. of Aberdeen in 1157, and by 1256 the church with all its fruits had been erected as a prebend of Aberdeen cathedral. Abdn. Reg. i, 5-7 [=RRS i no.237]. Cowan 1967, 40. No changes noted in Shennan 1892. A.B. Coll. 374-87 A.B. Ill. ii - not included.
