Parish notes

Granted by Dame Christian Byseth to Newbattle c.1338 .. it was nevertheless ineffective, remaining independent till 1444, when it was assigned with all its fruits to the provostry of the collegiate church of Corstorphine by James Kennedy bp. of St Andrews. Both parsonage & vicarage remained so annexed, while cure was served by a vicar pensioner. Newbattlet Reg. app. nos. viii, ix etc. Cowan 1967, 31-2. Note that Hist. Atlas 1996, 349 (DERW) has ‘Clerkington now Temple’. However, Cowan 1967 has Temple as a separate parish, with no cross-referencing. Note also a Clerkington House near Haddington. Ash 1972, in her list of parishes in deanery of Lothian (sic) has Clerctun (Clerkington), valued at 8 mks., no dedication given, and no mention of Temple (382-3).
