Notes

The NGR is for the old parish church. The dedication of the parish is uncertain. OPS suggests perhaps St Anne, owing to a yearly fair being held on 26th July (feast of St Anne) (OPS vol. I, 161) but this is far from certain.

Parish notes

Cowan (1967): Granted to Kelso by Wice, lord of Wiston, as a dependent chapel of his church of Wiston (c.1160), the chapel of the vill of John continued to be confirmed as a pendicle as late as 1232, probably not becoming parochial until c.1279 (Kelso Lib. nos. 336-7, 409, 413, 433).
