Parish notes

Granted to Guisborough by Robert de Bruce c.1170 and confirmed by his son William 1191x1215, the church was frequently in dispute between the canons and the bishops of Glasgow to whom the patronage was ceded in 1223, while the ‘parsons’ received increased emoluments (Gysburne nos.1176, 1185, 1186, 1188). The church was still connected with the priory in 1330, but thereafter resumed the status of independent parsonage within the patronage of the bp. of Glasgow (ibid. no.1188; Prot. Bk. Simon no.645; RSS iii no.2842; Ass. 261v). Cowan 1967, 42. Cummertrees CUT and Trailtrow TTX united in 1609, with Cummertrees to be the ‘place of resorte’ i.e. the site of the parish kirk (APS iv, p. 441).
