Parish notes
Appears to have remained an independent parsonage, within patronage of Lords of the Isles in 14th c., but presumably passed with the lands of that island by a grant in 1427 to the Macniels of Barra (RMS i app.1 no.9; ii no.2287; Monro W.I. 44-5). Cowan 1967, 94 (under Kilbarr). It appears to have been united with parish of South Uist after the Reformation, but was disjoined from it c.1734. Present extent seems to = old extent, and includes c.20 smaller isles, of which the chief are Bernera, Minulay, Pabbay, Sanderay and Wattersay on south, and Uidhay, Flodday, Hellesay, Gighay, Fuday and Fiaray on north. (OPS ii(1), 362.
