Parish notes
Confirmed to the uses of Arbroath by Matthew bp. of Aberdeen 1178x99, the church was confirmed to the abbey 1211x14 by William I, who was probably the original donor (Arb. Lib. nos. 1, 26, 197). For later refs. see Abdn, Reg. i, 22; Ass. 330, 393. Cowan 1967, 87-8. Note that in 1323 it is described as the mother church of Banf’ (RRS v no.240). This is explained by Cowan under Banff BFF: "A vicarage settlement was confirmed in 1257 by which a conjunction [of Banff] with the church of Inverboyndie BOY was effected. A single vicarage [consisting of Banff and Inverboyndie] thenceforth existed, while parsonage revenues remained with the abbey (Abdn, Reg. i, 22; Ass. 330, 393). Cowan 1967, 14." It also included the early parish of Montbrey MBX, for which see Cowan 1967 under Munbre.
