A rare example of an early parish name in baile. Dedication to 'St Colm' not in Redford 1988, but in Ó Muraíle 1997, 'First dedicated to St Nechtan, but later to St Columba' -Fasti, 46. A.B. Coll. 285-91. No change in 1891. Patron saint ‘Colmanus’. - v. also ACDS:NS, 44. not mentioned in Abdn. Brev. or Abdn. Mart. under 9 June, BUT in Abdn. Brev. under Sanctus Colmanus episcopus Oct. 16 ii fo.cxxviii (in rubric) ‘Et Colmanus habetur patronus apud Balheluy.’ Otherwise no clue as to who he might be. Not in Redford 1988. ACDS-NS 44 - adds that ‘a spring in its neighbourhood is appropriately known as St Columba’s Well. [ref. - N.K.M’Leod Churches in Buchan, 94].
