Parish notes

Both parsonage and vicarage were granted by James IV to the priory of Whithorn in 1508. RMS ii no. 3268. See Cowan 1967, 120 for more references. It may have originated as a proprietorial kirk attached to the estate of Kirkdale and Broach. It was merged in 1636 partly with Anwoth but mainly with Kirkmabreck. Its bounds are not recorded, but Carsluith was in KXJ and it is likely that the Carsluith and Auchenlarie burns represent the old marches. (D. Brooke, Parish Notes). The church of Kirkdale was dedicated to St Michael: ‘ecclesiam de Kirkdale .... in honore S. Michaelis fundatam, tam rectoriam quam vicariam ejusdem’ granted by king to Whithorn priory 1508 RMS ii no. 3268. Note that the grant is made by the king ‘ad instantiam familiaris militis sui Alex. Makculloch de Mertoun’.
