The name for the church of St Michael is inferred from the use of the Kilmihel in Loudoun Charters, Mount Stuart, no. 1. (1162 x 1189)where it is part of the 'terra' being granted (therefore a settlement name in this context). The dedication is confirmed by the request in 1549 of John Norvell’s testament that ‘corpusque meum sepeliendum in pulveribus sancti Michaelis de Loudoune’ [Glasgow Commissary Records, CC9/7/1, f 60, f 61]
