The estate of Morgunessete is described in the late twelfth century, its boundary markers including a Sedes Sancti Morgani which is a Latinisation of a presumed Scots Morgunessete. This implies that the name Morgunessete originally referred to a boundary-marking object (a rock or relief feature, probably) which then gave its name to the estate itself. The name is also probably the origin of the parish name Muiravonside.
