Mackinlay (1914, 393) notes: 'In the neighbourhood of the churchyard is St Lawrence's Well'. Note also that a 'St Lawrence's Bell' was kept at Edzell, kept by the hereditary dempsters, a family called Duray (probably from Gaelic deòraidh, 'dewar, hereditary custodian or relic-keeper'.
