Notes
The glen gives rise to the name of the nearby bay, OS Glencallum Bay, at its south-eastern end. The bay is shown on Roy's map as 'McColm's Hole', which suggests that Glen Callum may be named after someone called McCalum. But it is possible that Roy's name actually derives from Mo-Cholm, a hypocoristic form of Calum used of saints. In support of treating this name as referring to a saint is the entry in the Martyrology of Tallaght for 1 March, which celebrates 'Columbae Cinn Garadh' (Columba of Kingarth), while Martyrology of Gornam mentions for the same day 'Colum Caemfial' (Colum the gently modest) and is glossed 'Cinn Garadh' (of Kingarth). The settlemenet of Glencallum, situated in the glen, is named 'Challum' (1654), 'Glenkallum' (1649), 'Glenhallum' (1759). See Márkus 2012, 194-5.
