Notes

The northern part of this parish, on the shore of Loch Lomond, probably fell within the 3 mile girth or sanctuary of St Kessog's church in Luss, on the west side of Loch Lomond. For discussion see Márkus 2008. The NGR for the chapel is inferred from the fact that in 1563 the lands of Aber in Kilmaronock parish were granted to Patrick M'Kean 'wt ane aiker of land pertenand to the Chappell of Sanct Makessok, whereof the maill perteins now instantlie to Sir John Cowper as chaplaine and possessor of the said Chapellarie during his liftyme' [Ecclesiastical history of Kilmaronock, 125-6). It also relates to the location of the house shown as San Makessan on OS Digimap (NS424872), which lies immediately south-west of a field locally known as 'the Glebe' (personal comment, Alan Steel).
