The charter of 1543 (RMS iii no. 2894) says that Sanct-Sownis-Wallis is the name of two thirds of Duns Mains ('Dunse-manys') called 'lie Elfhoill'. This must correspond to the appearance of 'Elfholl' on Blaeu's map of Berwickshire (1654), which enables us to locate the place reasonably closely.
