Notes

Modern St Mary's Street, formerly St Mary Wynd, took its name 'from the chapel and hospice of St Mary ... which stood on its west side about forty yards south of the Netherbow, on land later entered from World's End Close. Said to have been originally Cistercian, it was in the control of the Town Council in 1499, and they were still operating it as a refuge for the destitute in 1589' (Harris 1996, 505). In 1542 it was referred to as lying 'in the burgh of Edinburgh, on the south side of the public street' (infra burgum de Edinburgh ex parte australi vici publici) (RMS iii no. 2822).
