Notes

This church may have been the home of the monks of Dornoch in the twelfth century (before the building of St Gilber'ts Cathedral in the thirteenth), when David I wrote to Rognvald (Reinwaldo)earl of Orkney and the earl of Caithness, 'I command and order that as you love me you shall love the monks and their men and things dwelling at Dornoch in Caithness, and wherever they shall go among you you will support them, not allowing that anyone do them harm or offence, nor allowing that it be done' (David I Chrs. no. 155, dated 1137 x 1151). See NMRS for discussion of the site of the church, its relationship to the cathedral.
