Notes
In 1684 it was recorded, 'There is a lesser Rivulet called the water of Tarfle ... it runs ... hard by the parish kirk (of Kirkcowan), where at a place call'd Lincuan the Laird of Craichlaw hath a salmon fishing, where sometimes he takes a good salmon with nets' (Geog. Coll. ii, 112). It gives its name to Lincowan Bridge (OS 6 inch 1st edn) which crosses the burn at this point.
