The name may derive from the story about Mary Queen of Scots having sailed from here (see below) or an association with the Cistercians of Dundrennan Abbey to which a road seems to have run from the harbour. OS Maps also show Port Mary as a settlement-name, a Port Mary House at the head of the harbour, Port Mary Bridge and Port Mary Cottage.
