A natural harbour. The name may derive from the story about Mary Queen of Scots having sailed from here (see below) or an association with the Cistercians of Dundrennan Abbey to which a road seems to have run from the harbour. OS Maps also show Port Mary as a settlement-name, a Port Mary House at the head of the harbour, Port Mary Bridge and Port Mary Cottage.
