The exact location of the site is unknown, but its existence is confirmed by a record in circa 1654, cited by Symson ('A Large Description of Galloway', Edinburgh 1856, cited by MacQueen 2002, 54): 'Kirkmabreck, so called from some saint or other, whose name was, they say, M'Breck, a part of whose statue in wood, was, about thirty years since in an old chapel at the Ferritowon [i.e Creetown] '.
