Notes

In support of the possibility that the name contains a saint's name is the fact that on the lands of Dalreagle OS 6 inch maps show a 'Chapel Well' and 'Old Kirk Yard' in 'Chapel Meadow' in the northern part of Dalreagle farm, on the south bank of the River Bladnoch. OS Name Book records (OS1/35/49/42): 'A small patch of elevated ground in Chapel Meadow and upon the farm of Dalreagle. Between 20 and 30 years ago a quantity of earth was removed from the place ... upon which occasion many bones were disinterred'.
