Notes

The association of St Kessog's Chapel with this site is made for the following reasons: a] RMS ii no. 2648 grants to Walter Logan of Gartconnel, inter alia, 'the lands of Balweys-Logane, extending to 4 merks of land pa.a., with half the chapel of St Kessog'. b] Balweys-Logane refers to Balvey or Balvie, which is the former name of the house now called Mains, New Kilpatrick, at NS537751. The nearby house of Little Balvie confirms this. c] The association of St Kessog's Chapel with the lands if Balvey/Mains, combined with the place-name Chapel Couch, about 500 metres away and presumably on the lands of Balvey/Mains, suggests that this is the location of the chapel of St Kessog. The NGR given is for OS Digimap 'Chapel Couch', for which site NMRS records (Canmap ID: 44543) that in the nineteenth century an old kirk (sic) was still spoken of, and a cemetery was attached. No trace now remains of chapel or graveyard on the surface, but excavation at the site did expose some remains of the walls of a possible chapel.
