Notes

See NMRS for the site and its history, and a description of surviving parts of the chapel in the nineteenth century. Prof. Barrow notes of this chapel that 'The somewhat unusual attestation of the Abbot of Arbroath [witness: Henrico Abbate Sancti Thome] in the south-west of Scotland may go to confirm the suggestion that St Thomas's Chapel in Dumfries was dedicated to Thomas of Canterbury'. We might also note that its earliest appearance in charters of William I lends itself to this suggestion, as William was the founder of St Thomas of Arbroath, and contemporary writers interpreted his capture at Alnwick in 1174 as a triumph for Thomas of Canterbury.
