The dedication to St Leonard here began as that of a hospital, St Leonard's Hospital, first recorded in 1140 (David I Chrs. no.89) but not recorded explicitly with the Leonard dedication until the 1240s (St A. Lib. 281). The first mention of St Leonard's as a church (rather than as a hospital) is in 1413 (St A. Lib. 15). The nominal parish had lands from which the revenues supported the work of the hospital.
