Notes

St John's Church, sometimes described as a chapel, was one of the buildings of Roxburgh Castle. There is no surviving evidence of exactly where it stood. The NGR given is for the castle. It is worth noting that its status as a church is asserted in the earliest sources, in the time of David I. However, by the reign of Malcolm IV it is being called a chapel (capella), as in RRS i no. 114 (1153 x 1156): 'Capellam de castello meo in Rochesburc', though in some ways the language applied to it is more appropriate to a church than a chapel: 'cum parrochia et decimis et oblacionibus et ceteris ecclesiasticis rectitudinibus et dignitatibus'.
