Notes
NMRS records 'turf-grown foundations at the centre of a subrectangular enclosure'. The site is, strangely, not named on OS 6 inch 1st edn and 2nd edn. Keith, in his 'View of the Diocese of Aberdeen' (1732) refers to 'Saint Finnan's at Abersnithick (p. 585) without giving the source of his information. The chapel stands close to the farm of OS Digimap Abersnithack Lodge. The name Abersnithick (vel sim.) has been identified, however, as a corruption of *Eccles Mo Nethoc, a commemoration of of a St Nechtan. It belonged to the Monymusk community of Céli Dé in the twelfth century. Keith's connection of Abersnithick with Finan, and the connection of Finan to this place, makes it seem likely that this chapel was earlier dedicated to Nechtan, *Eccles Mo Nethoc.
