Notes

The present church was built in 1764, but it is by the site of the medieval kirk, and the kirkyard has 10th/11th century carved stones (NMRS). There was a piece of land at or near the church glebe called Peighinn Muire, '(St) Mary's Pennyland', and it appears that part of the vicarage teinds of the parish was once a young seal called Cuileann Muire ('Mary's Pup'). See 'The Poems and Songs of John Mac Codrum', ed. Archibald Macdonald (Glasgow 1894), p. viii).
