Notes

See NMRS (Canmore ID 629) for the present church standing on the site of the remains of St Laurence's, possibly a twelfth century building. Early medieval carved stones have been uncovered at the site including the famous Papil Stone, and parts of slab shrines and a fragment of interlaced cross slab. 'Charles Thomas considers this to have been the site of the chief Dark Age monastery of southern Zetland'.
