Notes

The dedication of this church is attested in papal letters referring to 'the parish church of St Colmanell de Botylle' (1381, CPLS i, 67-8) and 'the parish church of St Colmanell of Butyll (1398 CPLS ii, 80). There seems to have been a well near the church, referred to in a booklet by the minister of the parish in circa 1905 (R.T. Tarbet, 'Buittle Parish-Past and Present8 (c.1905): 'The name of the old church has almost disappeared; it only survives in the name of a well within a bow-shot of the ruins — San Comell. It springs in a field called the "Meikle Kirkland," which was no doubt once the property of the church. San, of course, is Saint, and Comell is an evident corruption of Colmanell.'
