Notes

It is occasionally claimed (e.g. Mackinlay 1914, 189) that the church of Rutherglen was dedicated to St Conval, though the dedication is made perfectly clear by the 1262 entry noted here. The error arises, we suspect, from the several references of the fourteenth century to money paid by the provosts and baillies of Rutherglen 'ad luminare Sancti Convalli', or 'ad luminare ecclesie Sancti Convalli' (see ER i: 70, 87, 163, 270, 300 and 357). But none of these entries indicate that the light of St Convall or of the St Convall's church is in Rutherglen. And in all cases this payment is coupled with other payments for a chaplain, a deacon, a subdeacon and a light of St Kentigern in the Cathedral church of Glasgow. In other words, these are grants made from the king's fermes of Rutherglen to churches where he wishes to express his devotion. They tell us nothing of the dedication of Rutherglen church.
