'The parish church, first mentioned in 1561, in the Rental of the Bishopric, where is an entry of "the teindis of Ecolmkill callit the personaige of Tempill Ronaige."' (Reeves 1857, 416) This building of the twelfth or thirteenth century remained the parish church until the seventeenth century. It was built on the footprint of an earlier church, which itself overlay early Christian burials (6th x 8th century).
