Notes

The church (nineteenth-century?) to which this place-name refers on OS 6 inch maps stood in St Enoch Square, more or less on the site of St Theneu's Chapel, which stood in the midst of a burial ground which occupied the ground now forming St Enoch Square. Reecords of the fifteenth century show that the bones of St Enoch (aka St Teneu) were believed to lie in the chapel, as shown for example in Glas. Reg. no. 478: 'et beate Thanew sue matris [i.e. of Kentigern] in capella ubi ossa ejus requiescunt' [see also no. 407].
