Close to this street stood St Mary's Chapel (q.v.)(and hospice), on its west side, forty yards south of the Netherbow. It was earlier called St Mary's Wynd, but during city 'improvements' in the nineteenth century the wynd was increased in size by the demolition of all the buildings on its east side, and was renamed St Mary's Street (Harris 1996, 505-6).
