Notes

The present parish church occupies the site of the medieval Tironensian priory, which may be presumed to occupy the site of the earlier church which gave its name to Lesmahagow. This continuity at the same site of a presumed early medieval foundation dedicated to Féchin (Lesmahagow) and a later medieval Tironensian church dedicated to Machutus is interesting. The slight similarity in the pronunciation of the names Mo-Fhéchin and Mochutus may explain the change in cultus associated with the change in church organisation. Aberdeen Calendar, 271 records: 'In Scocia Sancti Machuti episcopi et confessoris qui apud Lesmahago claret miracluis'. Charter no. 476 of the Kelso Liber records that Robert I grants to Lesmahagow 10 merks from the mills of Carluke for candles for the tomb of St Machutus: 8.3.1316
