It lies on the east side of the Bishop's Palace (OS Digimap). This name does not contain a reference to a saint, as might appear. W.A.J. Prevost, in his 'Place-Nammes on the First Ordnance Survey Map of Dumfriesshire' (TDGNHAS 55 (1980) 181-2) records that the name was inspired by the kindness of Lady Anne Johnstone Hope (1768-1818), particularly for her generosity to the poor.
