Notes
On a haugh on the Clyde, which here forms the parish boundary. Although the parish is a creation of the sixteenth century, there was a much earlier chapel here, as indicated by the references to St Mary's Chapel of Machan (Maychan) etc. The presence of a hogback stone here also points to a much earlier chapel, in spite of the fact that it did not become a parish until relatively late
