The NGR given is for the centre of the village of Motherwell shown on OS 6 inch 1st edn. The settlement is now a much larger town. The original lands of Motherwell, however, may have been the farm of Motherwell lying west of the nineteenth-century village, shown on OS 6 inch 1st edn as High Motherwell (NS749570)and Low Motherwell (NS742568), on whose lands the eponymous well lay at the roadside. OS 6 inch 1st edn also shows Motherwell Mill and Motherwell Junction, both in Dalziel parish, and lying to the north in a detached part of the parish of Hamilton is North Motherwell.
