Notes

OS 6 inch 1st edn shows Lady Well as an antiquity (in gothic script)on the roadside between the settlements (farms?) of Low Motherwell and High Motherwell, and about 680 metres south-west of the village of Motherwell as it then was. The road is now called Ladywell Road. One must assume that the name 'Motherwell' as applied to the settlement area arises from the presence of the Lady Well which is on that land, and therefore that Motherwell is probably an earlier alternative name for the well itself. It is is described in the nineteenth century as 'An ordinary well about 10ft deep, partly covered by flagstones placed over it' (NMRS)
