Notes

The site of the mansion of Tannochside or Tennochside is now occupied by the modern building, St Gabriel's Church. The name now applies to the nearby modern housing estate. The seventeenth-century house was originally known as Tennochside. The name St Enoch's Hall was given to it by its proprietor, James Hosier, in the mid-nineteenth century (OS Name Book, cited by NMRS). It is likely that he gave this name under the (probably mistaken) impression that Tennochside contained the name Theneu, sometimes Sanct Thenew, and hence St Enoch, whose cult was lively in Glasgow.
