Notes
This is now known as Tibbie Shiel's Inn, from Isabella Shiel "who moved here with her husband Robert Richardson, a mole-catcher, in 1823... After the death of her husband int he following year Tibbie was determined to support herself and six bairns by taking in gentlemen lodgers." (www.tibbieshiels.com) Note the name-change had not occured by time of the OS 6" 1st edn. The site of the cottage is interesting, marking as it does a crucial part of the Yarrow-Ettrick border.
