The church has medieval sculpture in its graveyard. It lies close to a Roman fort at the western terminus of the Antonine Wall. It gives its name to the parish of Kilpatrick, later called Old Kilpatrick when New Kilpatrick was formed from its eastern part. Also Kilpatrick Braes (OS Digimap) formerly Kilpatrick Hills (OS 6 inchg 1st edn). It also gives its name to the medieval barony and settlement of that name.
